Get involved Volunteering Volunteering From its very beginnings on Deana Kenward's dining room table in 1984, the Addison’s Disease Self-Help Group has brought volunteers together to support anyone affected by Addison’s disease and adrenal insufficiency. Volunteers continue to be vital to our work. How you can help There are so many different ways to get involved at the ADSHG, and we aim to find something that you have the passion for, as well as the appropriate skills and experience. Your availability will be a strong driver too, for what role you may be able to undertake. At the ADSHG we are keen to involve as many people as possible, but we are not always able to offer volunteer roles that match your requirements - we'll certainly do our best though. Below we give you a bit more information and tell you how you can get in touch to tell us a little bit more about yourself, and your hopes. Different Ways to Volunteer - what suits you? Host a local meet-up One of the best ways to share your experience and to support others is by organising a local meet-up in your area; at a cafe, library, hall or at your home. Help show people they are not alone and build local support for each other. Running a local meet-up Become a Trustee An opportunity to make meaningful change through engagement with the charity at Trustee level. Help define the strategy of the charity, ensuring it meets its charitable objectives. Be a key team member bringing your skills & experience to the group. The board meets quarterly and supports the Operations Team regularly. Get in touch Organise an Awareness Stand For Addison's Disease Day (29 May) we support people running awareness stands in hospitals and GP surgeries around the UK. But it doesn't just have to be on the 29 May - you can run one any day of the year! We ask you to team up with a healthcare professional to ensure you are able to support all visitors. Run a Stand Share Your Story Write an article or blog post for our website, newsletter or magazine. Our members love to read about each other's experiences, to feel less alone and to help each other with tips and advice. We have lots of tips on what to consider when submitting an article. We are not able to guarantee to publish all articles. Write an Article Help run a member event We aim to run a couple of member events each year, where expert medics present, answer questions and offer emergency injection training. We need volunteers at our events to help with setting up, registration, the shop, and just with chatting to and supporting members. You need to be able to travel to undertake this role. We'll aim to reply in a couple of weeks to let you know if we have a matching role 3. We'll guide you into your role with support If we don't have the perfect role for you straight away, don't worry - we will keep your details to hand, and it doesn't mean that you can't get involved! Many members of our community demonstrate their passion by raising awareness with their local GP or hospital, by distributing our posters and leaflets to their healthcare team, by recommending that their GP undertake online training to broaden their knowledge, or by supporting others through answering questions on the forum. When we have a specific volunteering opportunity that requires certain skills, we will advertise it to our members via email. If you’re not already a member, please join us to stay informed. And don't forget, fundraising is another way of getting involved & supporting the ADSHG! If you don't think that a volunteer role will suit you but you still want to be involved, you could help organise a fundraising event, or take part in one yourself.
