Each year, supporters of the Addison’s Disease Self-Help Group proudly take part in the London Landmarks Half Marathon (LLHM) to raise funds and awareness of our rare condition. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who chooses to run for our charity and share their personal stories along the way.

This year, Ciara and Margaret took on the challenge in memory of Margaret’s niece, Maggie. Their inspiring experience is shared below in Margaret’s own words.

Running for Maggie

Ciara and I were absolutely delighted to be successful in securing a place in the LLHM. For us, this run meant so much more than crossing a finish line. We were running in memory of my little niece, Maggie, who tragically passed away due to undiagnosed Addison’s disease.

We took part to raise vital funds for the Addison’s Disease Self-Help Group, while also helping to raise awareness of this rare and often misunderstood condition.

To make the date even more poignant, the LLHM weekend coincided with what would have been Maggie’s 10th birthday weekend, making the experience deeply emotional and incredibly meaningful.

Incredible Support from the Community

The fundraising support we received was nothing short of overwhelming. Our local community, friends, and family truly outdid themselves, helping us raise an incredible £4,550. Alongside the donations came countless words of encouragement, kindness and support, all of which carried us through the tougher moments of training and race day itself. We are so grateful to everyone who contributed in any way.

Training for the Challenge

Training went really well in the lead-up to the event. We attended our regular GRC (Glenlough Running Club) training sessions, with the addition of longer weekend runs alongside our brilliant Saturday morning crew. The camaraderie and shared commitment made the training not only manageable, but genuinely enjoyable.

An Unforgettable Race Weekend

When race weekend finally arrived, excitement and nerves went hand in hand. There was the challenge of travelling, preparing and making it to the start line - alongside the added excitement of spending the weekend in London. What followed was an unforgettable experience.

The support around the course, combined with the breathtaking views of London’s iconic landmarks, created an atmosphere that was truly special. Every cheer, every sign and every smiling face along the route pushed us forward.

We would like to sincerely thank Chloe from the ADSHG team for giving us this opportunity to remember Maggie in such a meaningful way, while helping to raise awareness. It was an honour to run for her.

Thank you to Margaret, Ciara and all those who supported them throughout their LLHM journey. Raising awareness and supporting people affected by adrenal insufficiency, including Addison's disease, is only possible because of incredible supporters like you. We are deeply grateful for your dedication and generosity in Maggie’s memory.
